What can you expect when sitting down for therapy with Simon?

Simon Woliver (He/Him) is interested in helping his clients experience the present moment without judgment through body and emotion-focused awareness. He strives to not make meaning for others and instead is interested in how his clients are experiencing their full range of emotions in the here and now. Simon strives to incorporate Gestalt, interpersonal process, client-centered, and motivational interviewing theories when working with his clients. He is an experienced generalist, with particular specializations/interest in alcohol and other drug use disorders/assessment, trauma, anxiety, depression, family of origin concerns, men’s issues, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

He is also a supervisor who enjoys watching developing counselors come into their own and assist their clients' healing. Simon believes that each person’s unique experiences, cultures, and identities inform the therapeutic process. He believes Black Lives Matter and is a LGBTQ+ ally.

Simon has worked with a large and diverse population in both private practice and in The Ohio State University and Ohio Wesleyan University’s counseling centers.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Addiction Studies from the University of Cincinnati in 2009 and his Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The Ohio State University in 2011. He completed an 18-month Gestalt theory and practice training program at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland in 2017. He is also trained in Prolonged Exposure Therapy, which is an evidence-based treatment for people struggling with symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Simon works primarily from a Gestalt Theory/Therapy model, which focuses on helping clients to be more in contact with their body/senses/self in order to increase their awareness and ultimately gain access to more choice in life. To this end, therapy is collaborative and active and may call for clients to participate in activities that are uncomfortable or that engage difficult thoughts or feelings. Therapy will require active participation before, during and after sessions.

The potential benefits of this work include learning skills that lessen the impact of your difficult thoughts, feelings, and experiences; getting greater clarity about what matters to you; and making progress toward a more meaningful life.

  • Simon is in network with: Aetna, Cigna, Healthsmart, Humana, Medical Mutual, OhioHealthy, and Ohio Health Choice.

“I see gestalt therapy as a voyage of discovery. We are exploring how a person reaches out to their world, how they respond to their situation, and how past and present situations impact upon their (and our) process of reaching out in the here and now.”
